How
I work
1. Tools- Photoshop 7 and a Wacom Tablet. (I have an old Intuos 1 Wacom tablet, I think it's 8"x6". But I use a very small area of it, about 4"x3") The blue pencil in step 2 is a Col Erase pencil. They come in lots of colours, I was introduced to them by an animator friend of mine. I don't always use them, but they sometimes feel very nice to sketch with. 1. Rough layout in PS. Blocking shapes out I work on the composition in terms of shapes. I'm not thinking about any real detail here. 2. Rough Drawing on paper. I know roughly where all of the major elements are so I add a little detail to indicate the characters, costumes etc. 3. Colour rough in PS. ( This is what is submitted to the client for approval.) 4.Starting the finished drawing in PS 5. Working on finished drawing and some basic values. 6.Full size work in progress detail 7. Full size finished detail. It's perhaps worth mentioning that I used to do most of the drawing part on paper, but I'm a lot more comfortable drawing and sketching digitally now. If I include any value work at the drawing stage ( stages 4 and 5) I use the Color and Multiply painting modes to tint and sculpt what is there as I begin to work toward the finished image.
